Great start for the 1ST VII Netball

On Saturday 8th January, we held a pre-season tournament for five senior teams. It was a chance for the girls to blow away the cobwebs after the Christmas break and work on their fitness and netball skills on the court. Having not played any competitive netball together before, only training on a Monday evening, we entered the tournament not really knowing how we would fair against other teams.

The girls had clearly kept up their fitness over the Christmas holidays and the shooters had spent many an hour putting shots up, which was evident in the first few minutes of match play. Some excellent netball was being played and both attack and defence dominated the first couple of matches against some good Christhospital teams.

After a match off, the team needed to find their competitive drive again, which is always hard after a break and find their rhythm once again. The next match was against Kingston Grammar and up to this point they had won all of their games. Down in the first part of the match, we knew we only needed a couple of turnovers to get back into the game and we did just that. With some important steals from Annie A and some excellent feeds into the circle from Alexia, it came down to Bridget to not let the pressure get to her. She scored some outstanding goals and this put us ahead. All we had to do was to keep our lead but the team seemed to find some extra energy and more goals were scored.

Last match was against Magdalen College, who previously had some close matches with the other teams. We knew we had it in us to get the win, but we made hard work of it. Important passes were mis-timed and we let the pressure get to us. Final seconds we scored a very important goal to draw the match.

An outstanding performance by the team and both myself and Mrs Gordon-Martin are excited about the weeks ahead. A good foundation to build upon and a very worthwhile tournament, which allowed the girls to be versatile in their positions.

Players of the tournament went to Bridget and Annie A.
