Match Report
Charterhouse Boys-U14A vs  Cranleigh School
On: Saturday, 15 Jan 2022
Venue: at Home

The first hockey fixture of the Charterhouse career of these boys began with the challenging opener against Cranleigh. This is always one of the toughest fixtures in the calendar, and to face it in week one seemed likely to be a challenge.

Our team rose to it and exceeded expectations, putting Cranleigh on the back foot for the first fifteen minutes of the game. Relentless pressure and strong midfield play, combined with consistent defending, meant that we dominated possession, passing, and had several threatening attacking moves.

While we got to half time at 0-0, it never looked likely that we would concede, and AJK hoped it was an inevitability that we would win. Cranleigh enjoyed their best period of the game in the ten minutes after the half, surging forwards and getting into dangerous positions, although lacking the final ball and finish. Our accumulation of short corners finally paid dividends with three minutes to play, when the ball found itself in front of J. Allen (H) who finished capably at the back post to give us a one goal lead.

Thanks to a fine late save from J. Robertson (D), that was how the score stayed, and we recorded the first U14A win vs Cranleigh for ten years. The team was capably lead by T. Cowling (B), who also produced a real captain's performance in the centre of midfield, holding and distributing the ball with great sensitivity.

This was a real team performance, and bodes well for the rest of the season, and indeed the entire Carthusian hockey careers of these boys.
